Outline

Module/course Summary

Sustainability challenges span economic and geographic boundaries and are increasinglyimpacting the world, nourishing a global VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous)international environment. Political discontent, increasing protectionism and trade wars, thedigital divides, negative climate change, increasing corruption, massive biodiversity loss, globalsanitary vulnerabilities and social backlashes against unmatched and still growing incomeinequalities have led to dysfunctional market conditions, mass migrations and unstable globalvalue chains for cross-border production and trade of goods and services. Those GrandChallenges are complex problems with no easy solutions that affect future generations and thefuture of all businesses, especially multinational firms (MNCs). They are usually discussed asthe purview of governments reflected in the 2030 agenda for the United Nations 17 SustainableDevelopment Goals (SDGs). They transcend national borders, and require cross-countryanswers and enlarged intercultural cooperation.

As a result, new expectations from societies for MNCs are growing everyday and worldwide toexpand their roles by rethinking their responsible conduct as an integral part of their strategy.Because of their negative impacts on people and the planet in the past, but also thanks to theirsize, their multi-locations embeddedness (in global, regional and local contexts), theirunmatched market reach and non-market powers, MNCs are in a propitious position to engagein dialogue for sustainability with multi-level stakeholders of different nature (local and foreignentreprises who are buyers, suppliers, subcontractors, public institutions, third sector of socialpurpose organization / entreprise, civil society and consumers).

MNCs are uniquely positioned to effectively address Grand Challenges through moreresponsible practices with regards to all societal stakeholders with a focus on the longer-termsocial value creation. But this necessary gain in MNCs’ maturity for sustainability transition isconstrained by growing demanding regulations pushing a paradigmatic shift in all countrymarkets (mature, emerging and less developed). This paradigm shift promotes coordinatedresponsible strategies and practices in the multifunctional areas supportinginternationalization (strategic, financial, supply chain, legal, human resources, marketing).
