Module/course Summary

[Note: A similar course (BX31 The reflexive young manager) is taught in the MOO (Management Oneself & Others) specialisation. This elective is complementary to the BX31 course and can be taken in addition to the specialisation. The module in the specialisation focuses slightly more on reflexive techniques for future managers. The elective focuses slightly more on reflexive techniques for you as a current student entering soon the labour market.]

This elective focuses on how to use reflexivity and design thinking tools in the process of managing oneself. We are currently entering an area where long-term thinking becomes more and more obsolete. Our professional lives will increasingly be structured around short-term projects and reaction to opportunities than around a vertical construction of a career. In this context, reflexivity becomes a crucial capacity for every manager to counterbalance the negative side-effects of work acceleration and task fragmentation. Reflexivity is the process of critically assessing and thinking about one’s own attitudes, practices, and actions. It is a conscious effort at learning about oneself and improving one’s ways of thinking and acting. Reflexivity is not a natural feature of seasoned managers. It is as an ability that can be trained and developed, and it appears more and more needed for young professionals.
