Module/course Summary

The objective of the course is to make students familiar with various options of how firms can operate internationally. Students will get deep insights into various quantitative and qualitative approaches to the international firm as well as into an integrative approach. They will learn how international firms are embedded in the global economy and contribute to international trade and foreign direct investment. In addition, theories of internationalization will be covered helping to describe and explain the activities of international firms. Furthermore, the course addresses various options for managing structure and culture in the international environment. Students will also get insights into current developments in international business literature, placing particular emphasis on the relationships between headquarters and foreign subsidiaries.
At the end of the course, the students

-          will better understand objectives and philosophies of international firms
-          will be able to differentiate between quantitative, qualitative and integrative approaches to the international firm  
-          will be able to distinguish and evaluate various options for organisational structure of an international firm
-          will better understand the complex cultural environment international firms are operating in
-          will be able to apply their knowledge on headquarters-subsidiary relationships to practice.

This course is intended for all Master students.
